IPL Major Rules

The IPL operates under a structured format governed by specific rules that ensure fairness, competitiveness, and excitement throughout the tournament. These rules shape team composition, match procedures, and overall gameplay, making IPL one of the most professionally managed cricket leagues in the world.

Squad Composition and Auction

Each franchise builds its team through an annual player auction, where players from around the world are available for bidding. Each team can have a maximum of 25 players, with a restriction of 8 overseas players. However, teams must maintain a minimum squad of 18 players. The auction process creates a dynamic environment, as franchises compete to secure top cricketing talent.

Playing XI Rules

During a match, a team can field a maximum of four overseas players in their playing XI. Additionally, the Impact Player Rule allows teams to substitute one player during the match from a pre-selected list of five substitutes, adding a strategic twist to the game.

Match Format and Tournament Structure

The IPL follows a double round-robin format, where each team plays 14 league matches—7 at home and 7 away. The top four teams in the points table qualify for the knockout stage, which consists of Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Grand Final. The winner of the final match is crowned IPL champion.

Points System and Ranking

Teams earn points based on match results:

• Win: 2 points

• No result/Tie: 1 point

• Loss: 0 points

If teams have the same number of points, their ranking is determined by Net Run Rate (NRR), which reflects a team’s overall performance in terms of runs scored and conceded.

Super Over in Case of a Tie

If a match ends in a tie, the result is decided by a Super Over, where each team gets one over (six balls) to score the highest possible runs. The team with the highest score in the Super Over is declared the winner.
